Q: I am so nervous about asking my manager for a raise. What have you done and asked that got you the raise you wanted. I am 27 and working at bestbuy and have been since 2002. I only make 11.25 an hour and want 13 but not sure how to ask I feel that because I look 22 but am 27 that is working against me as far as money goes. If I look for another job is it okay to throw my age out there so they know I am not 22 and to pay me like a 27 year old educated person??
A: That's a pretty big jump in pay and I hate to say it will never happen but it is pretty doubtful. The best thing I ever did to get a raise $1.00, was make a list of why I felt I deserved one. I was really nervous too and the list helped me stay focused and not lose my cool. If you are worthy of the raise you will most likely get one as long as you are professional about it and you don't throw a tantrum like a child. "I want a raise or I quit!!" Yeah, you don't want to go out like that.
