Q: Well its my friend's birthday tomorrow and its awfully far. I haven't been talking to her much at all this year and we've kinda... Well, we're so different now and I'm going to be really isolated from the rest of her friends. She invited me like about 3 weeks ago and because I didn't want to make her mad, I said that I'm gonna go. Well not only that, but I don't have a ride or anything [but that probably count as an excuse for her]. Any helps making an excuse that probably won't get her too mad? I know there's the honesty thing but... That's my last resort.
A: Don't give a reason that's too vague, or one that's too detailed. Either will give it away as a lie or an excuse. Food poisoning is a great excuse. Fast onset, highly unpredictable, and only lasts 24-48 hours, so you can be up and running again with apologies in a couple of days. Not having a ride or source of transportation is another great excuse. If you have a car, breakdowns and/or a car battery dying last minute are fairly understandable reasons for an unscheduled absence. The truth works too, but it may net you some serious trouble and alienate you from your friend further.
